REC has decided to invest up to 49.9 million euros to extend the existing production capacity
Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) has approved plans to invest up to 49.9 million euros to upgrade and extend the production capacity at the existing plants at the Herøya manufacturing complex by approximately 100MW. That should ensure total wafer production out of Norway of around 1.75 GW in 2011. Read more…

RWE Dea acquired a 30 % interest from Repsol YPF (operator) in the onshore blocks Ta09 and Ta10 in Mauritania. The transaction was approved by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining in Nouakchott on June 8th, 2008. Read more…
Wärtsilä supplies two power plants to Papua New Guinea with a combined output of 90 MWe
The company has been awarded contracts to supply two power plants to be installed in the Madang region of Papua New Guinea. The combined output of the two power stations will be in excess of 90 MWe and will supply electricity to the entire nickel mining and refining project facilities. This will complement the existing 120 MWe of power already supported by Wärtsilä in the region. Read more…
Rolls-Royce has won a contract in the expanding Arctic exploration and production offshore market
It is to supply mooring equipment for two ice-class drilling rigs to be operated in the Shtokman field, one of the world’s largest natural gas fields, in the Russian sector of the Barents Sea. The contract value is about 12.64 million euros. Read more…
Research shows biofuels to blame for only a small part of food price rises
The price of food staples has risen by up to 244% since 2004, and parts of the media have been quick to blame the expansion of the world biofuels industry. However new research, published this week by New Energy Finance, concludes that, while increased biofuel production has been a contributing factor, particularly in certain crops and geographies, it is far from the dominant one. Electrabel gets permission to begin the construction of a coal-fired power plant in Wilhelmshaven
The competent authorities in Oldenburg (Germany) have granted Electrabel Deutschland permission to begin construction work on the coal-fired power plant planned for Wilhelmshaven. BKW FMB Energy acquired a minority holding of 33% in the plant at the beginning of 2008, the equivalent of an output of roughly 240 MW. Read more…
European Parliament insists on splitting energy giants
Meps (Members of European Parlament) gathered for their first reading vote in plenary yesterday (18 June) on the Commission's proposal concerning the EU's internal market in electricity, as published EurActiv. A sizeable majority - 449 in favour and 204 against - backed a report drafted by UK Socialist MEP Eluned Morgan. Morgan's report, endorsed by the Industry Committee in May, backs ownership unbundling as the only option for liberalising the EU's electricity sector. Read more…
St1 opens bioethanol dehydration plant in Finland
St1’s unique Etanolix concept of dispersed production of ethanol is supplemented now with a central dehydration plant at the port of Hamina town. The dehydration plant is yearly capacity is now 44 million liters of 99.8% bioethanol, which will be blended with gasoline. Preparations have already been made to double the capacity.Read more…
